The short answer

Shorten the work, make the end visible, and move the body first. Most homework battles are about task initiation and unclear endings rather than defiance, so the fix is structure and a timer rather than more pressure.

01

Set up the session

Ten minutes of movement first. One task on the table, everything else out of sight. A visible timer, and an agreed finish point that does not depend on quality.

Sit alongside for the first two minutes. Task initiation is the hardest part, and company through it is more useful than checking afterwards.

02

Protect the relationship

Agree with the school what a reasonable amount of homework time looks like, and stop at that point with a note rather than pushing to tears.

You are not the teacher. Your job is the conditions, not the curriculum.

Questions

Common questions

01
Should I reduce homework?
Talk to the school about a time limit rather than a task limit. Many schools will agree that thirty focused minutes with a note is better than two hours of conflict.

Why is homework such a fight, and what helps?
Homework asks for sustained effort at the end of a day that has already used it up, often with a vague task and a delayed reward. Shrinking the task, making the first step visible and agreeing a fixed stop time usually helps more than adding pressure.Do thisAgree one start time, one visible first step and a fixed finish — and tell the teacher what was actually possible. What this does not settleHomework difficulty has many causes, including undetected learning or sensory difficulties, and it cannot indicate ADHD by itself.
