How to become an ADHD assessor in the UK
The short answer
To assess ADHD in the UK you need current professional registration (GMC, HCPC, NMC or equivalent), training in a recognised structured diagnostic interview such as DIVA-5 or ACE+, supervised assessments while you build competence, and a supervisor or service willing to sign off your diagnostic decisions. There is no single national ADHD assessor qualification.
The route in, step by step
Register in a clinical profession first: psychiatry, clinical or practitioner psychology, mental health nursing, or another registered role your employer accepts for diagnostic work. Registration is the gate everything else hangs on.
Train in a structured diagnostic interview. DIVA-5 dominates adult practice in the UK; paediatric services also use developmental history tools and school-based information. Training is usually one to three days plus supervised practice.
Complete supervised assessments and report writing until a supervisor is content that you can reach a diagnostic decision — including deciding not to diagnose — and defend it in writing.
Then decide your setting: NHS service, an independent provider holding Right to Choose contracts, or sessional private work. Independent providers absorb the largest volume and recruit most often.
What makes a candidate employable quickly
Report writing speed and quality, because throughput in assessment services is limited by reports rather than appointments.
Prescribing capability. A prescriber can carry titration and review clinics alongside assessment, which materially widens both the role and the pay.
Comfort with remote delivery. Most adult assessment work in the independent sector is now video-based.
Where assessors actually work
Adult and children's services run separately: different tools, different informant requirements, different clinical supervision. Choose one to build depth in first rather than trying to cover both from the start.

Questions
Common questions
- 01
- Do I need to be a psychiatrist to assess ADHD?
- No. Registered psychologists, specialist nurses and other appropriately trained registered practitioners assess ADHD in many UK services. Prescribing medication is a separate qualification.
- 02
- How long does it take to become an ADHD assessor?
- Once you are registered in a relevant profession, structured-interview training plus supervised practice typically takes a few months rather than years.
- 03
- Can I train as an ADHD assessor with no clinical background?
- Not for diagnostic work. Non-clinical routes into ADHD services exist in coaching, care coordination and service management, but the diagnostic decision requires clinical registration.
